India vs New Zealand - 2024, 3rd Test Match, Day 1 in Mumbai Wankhede Cricket stadium

1. New Zealand’s Batting Performance:

New Zealand opted to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai but faced challenges on a slow and turning pitch. Indian bowlers, led by Ravindra Jadeja, kept New Zealand contained, dismissing them for 235. Jadeja took 5 wickets, and Washington Sundar supported well with 4, preventing New Zealand from reaching a larger total. Tom Latham (52) and Glenn Phillips (47) were the top scorers for New Zealand, building small partnerships but unable to convert them into a substantial score.

2. India’s Early Setbacks:

India started well with openers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who put on 50 runs swiftly. However, Ajaz Patel's spin soon disrupted India's momentum, removing Jaiswal, followed by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in quick succession. India's middle order found itself in trouble by the close of play, ending the day at 86/4 with Gill holding firm at 31 not out.

3. Late Collapse and the Night’s End:

India’s tail also faltered as Siraj, sent in as a nightwatchman, was dismissed without scoring. Ajaz Patel (2 wickets) and a sharp run-out executed by Matt Henry claimed crucial Indian wickets, leaving New Zealand in a competitive position.

India trails by 149 runs going into Day 2, with Rishabh Pant joining Gill at the crease. The team will aim for a solid batting display on the second day to recover from their late collapse and gain a lead.
